Hawkeye Community College to Launch Competitive Esports Program

WATERLOO–Hawkeye Community College is launching a new intercollegiate Esports program for fall 2018, becoming the first community college in Iowa and one of just a handful nationwide in the National Association of Collegiate Esports (NACe), the only association of varsity collegiate Esports programs in the U.S.

"Competitive video gaming is extremely popular around the world, and it's just beginning to pick up steam as a competitive event at the college level," said David Ball, director of Admissions, Athletics, and Student Life at Hawkeye Community College. "We believe Esports is a great addition to the RedTail family and we're excited to be the first community college in Iowa to join NACe." 

Hawkeye's new Esports program will include men and women in video game competition with other institutions. Games include Overwatch, Heroes of the Storm, Dota 2, and League of Legends – the most popular PC game in the world.

A dedicated practice and competition space will be located in the Brock Student Center on Hawkeye's Main Campus. 

"Esports participants will be held to the same high standard as all other RedTail student-athletes," Ball said. Esports will join women's volleyball and men's golf as the newest additions to the Hawkeye RedTail Athletics program this fall. Other intercollegiate offerings include men's and women's soccer, co-ed sports shooting, men's and women's cross country, men's and women's track and field, and dance.
