Bio

Courtney Calkins, originally from Osseo, Minnesota, has been named the head softball coach for the RedTails.

Courtney was a starting pitcher for Iowa Lakes Community College where she earned her A.A. degree before moving on to Tennessee Wesleyan University, while playing two more years for the Bulldogs. Courtney obtained her B.S. in Mathematics from Tennessee Wesleyan, and an M.S in Mathematics from Shawnee State University.

Throughout her softball career, Courtney earned many awards including the NJCAA Lea Plarski Award, Pinnacle Academic Achievement Award, and the Appalachian Conference Champion of Character Award. Additionally, Calkins earned multiple All-Conference and All-American honors for her outstanding athletic achievements.

Calkins started her coaching career at Iowa Lakes Community College as the assistant coach for the last two seasons. During her tenure, she has helped coach the Lakers to two ICCAC Region XI Championship games, and a 38-12-1 record this past season.

“We are extremely excited to have Coach Calkins lead the implementation of our softball program here at Hawkeye.”, said Director of Athletics and Recreation, Ethan Crawford. “Her passion, drive, and knowledge of our highly competitive conference will help lay the groundwork for a successful softball program for years to come. Building an athletic program from the ground up is a unique task, and with Coach Calkins at the helm, we believe the RedTails will have instant success”, Crawford said.

“I am honored to be hired as the new Head Softball Coach at Hawkeye Community College. I am very excited to get the opportunity to start a brand new program, and I’m looking forward to building a solid softball program that will be competitive in the ICCAC,” commented Coach Calkins. “Hawkeye has done a great job with building an atmosphere that allows its student-athletes to be successful both on and off the field, and I can’t wait to start this journey here.”
