RedTails Track and Field Hires Assistant Coach Mathew Ferris

WATERLOO-Mathew Ferris is the new assistant coach for men's and women's track and field at Hawkeye Community College.

Ferris recently graduated with a Master of Science in physical education with a focus in coaching philosophy at Southwest Minnesota State University. He has also received a bachelor's degree in early childhood education at the same university.

During his track and field career he was a NJCAA division-I student athlete at North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC). He became team captain in 2011 and was a NJCAA Indoor National qualifier the same year.

He started his coaching career with NIACC, where he coached for one year before he started as an assistant coach at Southwest Minnesota State University. During his time at SMSU he helped the student athletes reach their top potential as seven men's school records and 13 women's school records were set. He also coached as an assistant at Marshall High School where he had three individual state qualifiers and two relay state qualifiers.
