RedTail Track and Field Team Volunteers at the NE Iowa Special Olympics

RedTail Track and Field Team Volunteers at the NE Iowa Special Olympics

On Sunday, March 3, 2024, a handful of the RedTail Track and Field student-athletes volunteered at the Northeast Iowa Special Olympics at UNI Dome in Cedar Falls.

The NE Iowa Special Olympics is an opportunity for people with either an intellectual disability, a cognitive delay, or a developmental disability. Athletes must be eight years or older to be eligible to compete. The competition included various track and field events and swimming.

Liam Carlson was one of the student-athletes who volunteered at the event, and he had fun with the event. He said, "It feels good to give people with special needs the opportunity to perform." Carlson was in charge of helping out with the softball throw, and then he sorted winners' heat sheets and labeled and sorted metals.

Some of the other student-athletes who were volunteering were in charge of recording the times of the races, announcing the winners, and also directing people on where to go. This was a great opportunity for the student-athletes to give back to their community and get involved.
