Hawkeye Community College Bests NICC in Sports Shooting Matchup
The RedTail Sports Shooting team defeated Northeast Iowa Community College in their first home meet of the season on September 24.
Hawkeye Community College hit 485 targets to NICC's 457 during a windy competition at the Waterloo Izaak Walton League.
"Our home field advantage and experience in windy conditions were very beneficial for our win and sweeping the medals," said head coach Troy Emley.
Among many standout performances, Chase Bindl (FR, Spring Green, WI) led the experienced RedTail squad shooting an impressive 100 straight and earning the top spot among the men. He was followed to the award podium by Cole Slabaugh (FR, Uniontown, OH), Colton Crooks (JR, Charles City, IA), and Cole Cross (FR, Colwell, IA) in a three-way tie for second with 96 targets. A shootout determined the final rankings, with Slabaugh in second (+13), Crooks in third (+12), and Cross in fourth (+3).
In the women's contest, Brenna Leitner (FR, Belle Fourche, SD) led the sweep of the individual medals with 97 targets. Lydia Covert (SO, Lakewood, NY) kept her consistent performances with her first ever 50 straight, coming in second with a combined 96 targets. Gabby Wright (FR, Waterloo, WI) rounded out the women's top three.
"We fought for every target," Emley said. "This competition will help our mental game for later in the season. We look forward to our next opportunity to compete on October 4 against Indian Hills Warriors (Trap-Singles)."
