RedTail Softball Split on Last Day of the Spring Games

The Hawkeye RedTail Softball Team finished off their four-day stint at the Spring Games in Florida with two final games on Saturday, March 16th. The RedTails split on the day, losing the first game to #1 Parkland College 8-0 in five innings, and winning game two against College of St. Mary 10-5.

 

Game 1: 8 (#1 Parkland), 0 (HCC) 5 innings

Parkland first scored in the bottom of the first on a walk, RedTail error, and two doubles. They took an early 3-0 lead. They continued to score in the bottom of the second, adding three more runs from a single, triple, a RedTail error, and a double.

The RedTails got their only base runner on in the top of the fourth, getting on base from a Cobra error, but were unable to capitalize.

Parkland added two more runs to their lead to go up 8-0 in the bottom of the fourth, scoring from a walk, single, double, and a wild pitch. The RedTails couldn't get their bats going, ending the game in the fifth inning down 8-0.

Madisen Theel took the loss on the mound, giving up eight hits, eight runs, three earned, three walks, and one strikeout.

 

Game 2: 10 (HCC), 5 (College of St. Mary)

An exciting last game for the RedTails began with Hawkeye scoring in the bottom of the first. Kisha Reed got on base from an error in the field and moved to third from a double from Caydance Sharp. Lizzy Hamand doubled herself to score both Reed and Sharp. Not to be outdone, Chardonnay Hubert hit a single to score Hamand giving the RedTails a 3-0 lead.

College of St. Mary responded quickly in the top of the second scoring from a RedTail error, a double, and a sacrifice fly, making the score 3-2 in favor of the RedTails.

The RedTails grew their lead by two in the bottom of the third when Dharma Woodruff started the inning off with a line drive, forcing an error by the defense to get on base. Kylie Collins hit a double to left field to score Woodruff. Hubert got a single herself, advanced to second on the ball in play, and scored when Sidney Schafer hit a single.

The game saw a quiet fourth inning, but in the fifth, the Flames struck with a single and double to score one, making the game 5-3.

College of St. Mary's wasn't done there, scoring two to tie up the game in the top of the sixth. They did this on two doubles and a triple. Schafer caught an attempted squeeze bunt pop up and doubled off the runner at third with Harley Gaudet to force a double play. The inning ended with a ground ball to Hubert.

The RedTails weren't done scoring as they showed some energy in the bottom of the sixth. Reed singled and moved to third on a hit from Sharp. Hamand then hit a sacrifice fly to score Reed. Woodruff singled herself to score Sharp. Collins walked, and Hubert singled to score Woodruff and advance Collins to third. Courtney Hemsley got a hit to score two more runs for the RedTails, giving them the 10-5 lead.

A quick three up, three down inning finished the complete game win.

The RedTails were lead by Hubert at the plate, who went 4-4 with two runs scored and two RBI's. Hamand was 2-3 with three RBI's, and Hemsley was 2-3 with 2 RBI's and a sacrifice bunt. Each player in the lineup had at least one hit. Sidney Schafer went the distance on the mound, pitching the complete seven inning game, giving up nine hits, five runs, three earned, and three strikeouts.

 

The Hawkeye RedTails are now 4-10 on the season. The RedTails have a weeklong break before their next competition, which occurs at home on Saturday, March 23rd against Southwestern Community College at 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM. Sunday, March 24th with also see two more home games for the RedTails who will face Clarke University at 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM.
