RedTails Drop Two to Eagles

The Hawkeye RedTail Softball Team hosted Kirkwood Community College on April 10th. The RedTails dropped both, losing game one 24-8 in five innings and losing game two 21-2 in five innings.

 

Game 1: 8 (HCC), 24 (KCC)

Kirkwood started out with hot bats and couldn't quite be caught up. They took an early 5-0 lead in the first inning and added four more runs to go up 9-0 in the second.

The RedTails responded in the bottom of the second. Dharma Woodruff started the inning off by forcing an Eagle error, and Chardonnay Hubert put a hard ground ball into play to force a second Eagle error to give the RedTails runners at first and second. Sidney Schafer then walked to load the bases and was quickly followed with a walk by Courtney Hemsley to score Woodruff. Savannah Ringheden put the ball in play to score Hubert. Kylie Collins followed with a base hit to score two more RedTails. Caydance Sharp hit a line drive to right field to score Collins, and Lizzy Hamand followed with a double herself to score Sharp. The big inning gave some life to the RedTails, putting them behind 9-6.

Kirkwood came back in the top of the third to put up four more runs. 

Down 13-8, Dailyn Marine started the bottom of the third with a single to right field and quickly scored after a Ringheden homerun. 

The Eagles continued to score, putting up four more runs in the top of the fourth and seven runs in the top of the fifth. Unfortunately, Hawkeye was unable to respond and lost 24-8 in five innings.

Hawkeye was led by Ringheden at the plate who was 1-2 with one homerun, one run scored, and three runs batted in. Sharp, Hamand, and Marine each had a hit as well. Schafer took the loss on the mound, going 4.1 innings, giving up 20 hits and 15 earned runs. Hemsley pitched 0.2 innings, giving up four hits and two earned runs.

 

Game 2: 2 (HCC),  21 (KCC)

Kirkwood started out the game continuing their hitting streak, scoring one run in the top of the first. They added three more runs to go up 4-0. In the top of the third, the Eagles tacked on four more runs.

Hawkeye got a spark when Marine bunted for a base hit and scored when Collins hit a homerun. 

The Eagles added five more runs in the fourth to put them up 13-2. They found more success at the plate, scoring eight runs in the top of the fifth to have a 21-2 lead. 

Unable to put runners on, the RedTails ended the game in the bottom of the fifth, losing 21-2.

At the plate, Collins led Hawkeye going 1-2 with a homerun, one run scored, and two runs batted in. Sharp and Marine each had a hit. Woodruff took the loss on the mound, going 3.2 innings, giving up nine hits, eight earned runs, five walks, and one strikeout. Hemsley pitched 1.1 innings, giving up eight hits, seven earned runs, three walks, and one strikeout.

 

The RedTails move to 5-23 on the season and 1-11 in conference. They host back to back conference games this weekend. Hawkeye will face Iowa Central Community College on Saturday, April 13th at 1:00 and 3:00 PM and Ellsworth Community College on Sunday, April 14th at 12:00 and 2:00 PM.
