RedTail Softball Falls in Conference Doubleheader

The Hawkeye RedTail Softball Team traveled to Northeast Community College to face the Hawks in a conference double header. The RedTails lost both, losing game one 12-6 and losing game two 11-10. 

 

Game 1: 12 (NCC), 6 (HCC)

The RedTails jumped out to an early lead, when Kisha Reed led off the inning with a stand up triple and quickly scoring after a Caydance Sharp single. Chardonnay Hubert then doubled to score Sharp, giving the RedTails a 2-0 lead. 

The Hawks quickly responded, scoring four runs in the first, scoring from a walk, double, three singles, and a hit by pitch. 

 

Hawkeye took back the lead in the top of the second. Dailyn Marine singled and advanced to second when Harley Gaudet drew a walk. Savannah Ringheden then singled to score Marine. Sharp hit her second single to score Gaudet. Lizzy Hamand grounded out to score Sharp, putting the RedTails up by one run. 

Back to back doubles from Gaudet and Reed  gave the RedTails another run to lead 6-4. 

The Hawks scored in the third on a homerun to put them within one run. 

In the fourth, Northeast scored four runs on a RedTail error, a single, double, and homerun. 

The Hawks went up 10-6 in the fifth innings scoring from a solo homerun. 

They scored their last runs of the game in the sixth, putting up two more runs from a homerun, double, walk, and fielders choice. 

Hawkeye put runners on first and second in the top of the seventh to threaten to score but were unable to capitalize, losing 12-6. 

At the plate, Sharp led the RedTails going 2-4 with two runs batted in and one run scored. Hamand, Reed, and Hubert each had two hits. On the mound, Sidney Schafer took the loss giving up thirteen hits, eight earned runs, one walk, and four strikeouts. Courtney Hemsley threw one inning, striking out one. 

 

Game 2: 11 (NCC), 10 (HCC) 

A high scoring game in game two was started by the RedTails in the top of the first. Reed hit a homerun to score the first run. Sharp followed with a hard hit to force a Hawk error. Hamand then walked to put runners on first and second. Hubert got on from a fielders choice, and Marine singled to score two RedTails, giving Hawkeye a 3-0 lead. 

Northeast quickly responded and scored four runs. A walk, single, RedTail error, and homerun gave the Hawks a 4-3 lead. 

The bats were quiet until the fourth inning when Hawkeye scored one run to tie the game. Gaudet was hit by a pitch and stole second. She advanced on a wild pitch and tagged up on a sacrifice fly by Ringheden. 

The Hawks had a big fourth inning, scoring four runs. Two homeruns, a single, and a walk gave them a 8-4 lead over the RedTails. 

Northeast scored two more in the fifth, scoring from two singles, hit by pitch, and a double. 

In the top of the sixth, the RedRails chipped away at the score. Reed started the inning with a single and scored when Sharp hit her first homerun of the game. Hamand followed with a single and moved to second on a Hubert walk. Courtney Hemsley also walked to load the bases. Marine put the ball in play to score Hamand. Schafer walked to load the bases again. Hubert then scored on a wild pitch to put the RedTails down 10-8. 

Down to their last at bats, Hawkeye found some fight to tie the game. Reed forced a Hawk error and quickly scored from Sharp's second homerun of the game. 

With the score tied 10-10 going into the bottom of the seventh, Northeast put the pressure on. They doubled to start the inning. They advanced on a fielders choice and scored on a RedTail error, giving Northeast the walk off 11-10 win. 

At the plate, Hawkeye was led by Reed who was 3-5 with one run batted in and three runs scored. Sharp was 2-4 with two homeruns, four runs batted in, and two runs scored. Marine had two hits. On the mound, Schafer took the loss going 2.1 innings, giving up two hits and no earned runs. Hemsley went 4.1 innings, giving up nine hits, eight earned runs, two walks, and two strikeouts. 

 

The RedTails move to 7-35 on the year and 3-23 in conference. Hawkeye has their last conference matchup of the year on Monday, April 29th at DMACC. Game times are set for 2:00 and 4:00 PM.
