
Women’s Track and Field Finish Second at Jack Jennett Open
The RedTail Women's Track and Field team collected a total of 110 points and a second-place team finish at the Jack Jennett Open in Cedar Falls on Thursday, January 21.
Kylee Neighbors started the day off strong for the Hawkeye RedTails with a first-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles and a time of 9.91 seconds. Ryann Portch added another first-place win for the RedTails in the 800-meter run. Her time of 2:23.27 qualified her for nationals.
"Overall we had a short week and were able to get some national qualifiers," said head coach Tyler Mulder. "Ryann Portch was able to qualify in the women's 800."
Mindi Sande kept it rolling by taking first in the 3000-meter run with a time of 12:31.15.
Hannah Payne added a second-place finish for the RedTails in the mile. Jenna Hummell and Sophie Spargur landed third place finishes in the 200-meter dash and the 400-meter race.
The RedTail women's 400-meter relay team of Hummell, Spargur, Portch, and Kaylee Leicht ended the meet by grabbing a second place finish.
Three RedTail throwing athletes competed in a meet of their own on Friday.
The RedTail Track and Field throwing athletes set six new personal records in Davenport at the St. Ambrose Wellness and Rec Center.
"All of our throwers were able to get into this meet last minute," said head coach Tyler Mulder. "So for them to all step up and PR, I'm super pumped for them and it's a true testimony of their hard work!"
RedTails Allison Flanscha and Alyssa Striegel competed in the women's shot put and weight throw. Flanscha landed third place in the shot put with a mark of 10.78 meters and took seventh in the weight throw. Striegel placed third in the weight throw with a mark of 11.22 meters and she took fifth place in the shot put.
RedTail Blake Veenstra represented the men at Friday's meet. Veenstra took fourth place in the weight throw with a mark of 12.90 meters. He also took a close fifth place finish in the shot put with his mark of 14.80 meters.
Next up, the RedTails travel to Maryville, Mo., to compete in the Herschel Neil Invite on Saturday, January 30.
