Hawkeye C.C. Hosts High School Esports Tourney

Hawkeye C.C. Hosts High School Esports Tourney

On December 4, Hawkeye hosted three local high schools for an Esports tourney. Dike-New Hartford, Saint Ansgar, and Waterloo East High School were the three schools that participated in this event. Super Smash, Rocket League and Overwatch headlined the lineup for games of the day. RedTail head Esports coach Ryan Goeke talked about how the tourney could support the program.

"Putting on this tournament gets people from local high schools to come and see our facility, and just getting the word out there that we have an Esports program, in general, is pretty helpful," said Goeke.

Dike-New Hartford Esports head coach and VP of the Iowa High School Esports Association (IAHSEA), Lauren James, discussed how the tourney would benefit the students.

"There are a lot of students who are extremely passionate about Esports, and having events like this…gives them an opportunity to showcase their skills with other schools around the area," says James.

"Having Esports, in general, in schools is also a fantastic opportunity for students who oftentimes don't have a role in traditional sports…that are still able to at least highlight those skills that we get from traditional sports like comradery, sportsmanship and other skills along those lines."
