RedTail Softball Goes 1-1

The Hawkeye RedTail Softball Team enjoyed a warm day in Clermont, Florida, competing in two more games. The RedTails split on the day, winning game one against Waubonsee Community College by a score of 7-5. Game two resulted in a 5-15 loss to Spoon River Community College in five innings.

 

Game 1: 7 (HCC), 5 (Waubonsee)

The RedTails started the day off with a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Kisha Reed lead the inning with a single and a stolen base. She then advanced to third and home from two wild pitches by the Chiefs.

Waubonsee then added two of their own in the top of the second. A single and homerun gave the Chiefs a 2-1 lead. Waubonsee added another run in the top of the third.

Down 3-1, Reed stepped up and continued her streak, hitting a double to get the inning started. Lizzy Hamand then followed suit and hit a homerun to tie the game at three a piece

The RedTails didn't stop there, in the bottom of the fourth, Savannah Ringheden added a homerun to go up one run.

Waubonsee responded with their own single and homerun, taking back the lead.

Down by just one run, Reed was up to the plate and started the bottom of the fifth with another double. Caydance Sharp hit a single, scoring Reed, tying up the score.

A quick defensive sixth inning gave the bats back to the RedTails. Dharma Woodruff hit a homerun to give Hawkeye a 6-5 lead. Courtney Hemsley got on from a Chief error, advanced to second from a single by Reed, and advanced to third from a ball in play from Sharp. With bases loaded, Hamand had patience at the plate, drawing a walk to score Hemsley.

The RedTails went into the top of the seventh, up 7-5. A popup, strikeout, and grounder to Harley Gaudet ended the game.

Madisen Theel earned her first collegiate win, pitching a complete 7 innings. She gave up ten hits, five runs, four earned, one walk, and two strikeouts. At the plate, Reed lead the RedTails going a perfect 4-4 with three runs scored. Hamand was 2-3 with three RBI's and one run scored. Woodruff and Ringheden homered, and Chardonnay Hubert and Sharp each added a hit.

 

Game 2: 5 (HCC), 15 (Spoon River)

Spoon River scored in the bottom of the first inning, taking a 2-0 lead early on from a single and homerun.

The Snappers added to their lead, scoring three more runs in the bottom of the second.

Hawkeye responded in the top of the third with a two out rally started by a Kylie Collins single. She then advanced to second from a single from Reed. Collins moved to third when Sharp walked to load the bases. Hamand walked for the second time today on a bases loaded situation to score Collins.

Spoon River responded in the third inning by scoring one on a homerun.

The RedTails started another two out rally with a Sidney Schafer single. Ringheden added a single herself to move Schafer to second. Collins singled to score Schafer, making the score 6-2 in favor of Spoon River.

The Snappers added a few more runs. The RedTails were down 10-2 going into the top of the fifth. Showing some fight, Sharp began the inning with a single, followed by a Hamand single, followed by a ball in play by Chardonnay Hubert to load the bases. Allison Beenken then stepped up and singled to left field to score Sharp. Hemsley quickly followed with a single herself, scoring Hamand and Hubert.

Going into the bottom of the fifth, the RedTails couldn't hang on to their momentum. Spoon River scored five more runs to complete the run rule and gave the Snappers a 15-5 win.

Sharp and Hamand both made impacts at the plate, both going 1-2 with one run scored for each. Hamand, Beenken, and Hemsley each had RBI's. Schafer took the loss on the mound, giving up 14 hits, 15 runs, 10 earned, and 2 walks.

 

The RedTails look to earn a few more wins with two more games on March 15th in Minneola, Florida. The RedTails compete at 9:15 AM EST and 11:30 AM EST against Lake Michigan College and University of Northwestern-St. Paul.
