RedTails Fall Short in Conference Double Header

The Hawkeye RedTail Softball team hosted a doubleheader against North Iowa Area Community College on March 30th. The RedTails dropped two close games, losing game one 6-3 and losing game two 8-7.

 

Game 1: 3 (HCC), 6 (NIACC)

NIACC started off the game by scoring two runs early in the first. They did this on two RedTail errors and a stolen base, and a fielder's choice.

The Trojans tacked on two more runs in the top of the second, going up 4-0, scoring from a single and homerun.

One more run for NIACC crossed the plate in the top of the fourth from a homerun.

Hawkeye struck back in the bottom of the fourth starting from a leadoff walk from Caydance Sharp. Kisha Reed advanced Sharp to third. Sharp crossed then crossed the plate as Reed drew the throw.

A quiet few innings until the top of the seventh inning. NIACC scored one more run off of back to back doubles to go up 6-1.

Hawkeye saw some life in the bottom of the seventh inning. Reed started off the inning with a double and scored from a double from Lizzy Hamand. Kylie Collins followed suit with a two-out double to score Hamand. Unfortunately, the scoring stopped short, resulting in a 6-3 loss for the RedTails.

The RedTails were led by Hamand at the plate, going 1-3 with one run scored and one run batted in. Collins and Reed also were 1-3 at the plate. Sidney Schafer took the loss on the mound, going all seven innings, giving up 12 hits, four earned runs, four strikeouts, and one walk.

 

Game 2: 7 (HCC), 8 (NIACC)

NIACC scored first again off of three singles, giving them the 1-0 lead in the first.

The RedTails scored their first run of the game when Chardonnay Hubert hit a homerun in the bottom of the second. Allison Beenken and Courtney Hemsley followed with singles to get Beenken into scoring position. Sharp hit a hard ball to score Beenken and advance Hemsley to third. Reed got a hit to score Hemsley, putting the RedTails on top 3-1.

The Trojans wasted no time rebounding back, hitting a three-run homerun in the top of the third inning to put them in the 4-3 lead. Another two-run homerun expanded their lead 6-3.

Hubert started the RedTails again the bottom of the third, hitting a double. Beenken gets her second hit of the day, scoring Hubert. Hemsley followed with her second hit of the day, and Savannah Ringheden scored both with a homerun. The RedTails then lead 7-6.

NIACC took back the lead in the top of the fifth, going on a two-out rally to put across two more runs.

Down 8-7, the RedTails had opportunities to score in the last three innings, but couldn't capitalize.

The RedTails had 14 hits in the game and were led by Reed at the plate who was 4-5 with one run batted in. Chardonnay Hubert was 2-2 with two runs scored, one run batted in, and two walks. Beenken was 2-3 on the day with two runs scored and one run batted in. Dharma Woodruff took the loss on the mound, pitching five innings, giving up ten hits, seven earned runs, three strikeouts, and four walks. Schafer pitched two innings, giving up just one hit.

 

The RedTails move to 4-14 on the season and 0-4 in conference play. Hawkeye softball is back in action next Wednesday, April 3rd at Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge, Iowa. Game time is set for 2:00 and 4:00 PM.
