The RedTails faced a tough challenge against Heartland Community College on September 14, falling 6-2 in a competitive match held in Normal, IL. Despite their efforts, Hawkeye struggled to keep pace after an early back-and-forth start.
Heartland struck first, scoring just over a minute into the game, but Hawkeye responded quickly, with Morgan Aikey equalizing moments later with an unassisted goal. However, Heartland regained control shortly afterward and built a commanding lead by halftime, sending the RedTails into the break trailing 4-1.
In the second half, the RedTails fought hard, and Jil Lehmann netted their second goal of the game at the 53-minute mark with another unassisted effort. However, despite good defensive work from goalkeeper Kim Bircher, who made five saves throughout the match, the RedTails were unable to turn the tide.
Reflecting on the match, Head Coach Chris Rennie said, "Today was our first big challenge of the season. We knew coming here that we would learn a lot about ourselves and where we are currently as a team. We are, of course, disappointed by the result. However, we now come away knowing where we need to grow and the areas that we need to focus on."
The RedTails will regroup and look to improve as they continue their at Northeast Community College on September 21st.
